About The Program
The FSU Department of Art Education is the oldest department of its kind in the South. The distinguished faculty in the Department of Art Education is composed of seven members, each of whom holds the doctoral degree.
The Department of Art Education offers programs leading to the bachelor of science (BS), bachelor of arts (BA), master of science (MS), and master of arts (MA) degrees with certification, Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.),and Doctor of Education Degree (Ed. D.).
Undergraduate
The primary mission of the undergraduate program is to train art teachers for public and private school service. A pre-art therapy option is offered in conjunction with certification. Students have the opportunity to participate in the University's Florence or London programs as part of their course of studies.
Extensive in-school observation and participation are required. The undergraduate preservice program for the education of teachers was developed around the theoretical position of discipline-based art education. The learning structure of the program is patterned on the content and inquiry structures of mature practicing professionals in studio art, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics, and is adapted to the developmental stages, cognitive styles, and special and individual needs of students.
The principle goals of the program are to deepen the visual and cultural literacy of future art teachers and to increase the shared body of visual information which is crucial for the fundamental base of art knowledge from which art teachers must teach.
Graduate
The graduate curricula lead to the master of arts in arts administration, the master of arts and master of science, certificate in museum studies, specialist, doctor of philosophy, and doctor of education degrees in art education with specializations in arts administration, art therapy, and art education.
At the graduate level, programs are designed to produce leaders in instruction, research, and administration in art education, art therapy, arts administration, and museum studies. Students are encouraged to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge that constitutes the teaching/learning and administrating processes in art.
