FSU Art Education alumna Kathleen Carter (MS ’91) and students of her Starry Night Studio in Tallahassee, FL have been given the honor of designing and creating the ornaments for the State of Florida tree as part of the National Christmas Tree Display in President’s Park in Washington, D.C. Local artists and students from each state are selected to create 24 ornaments for their respective state tree.

”It is an honor to be selected because it gives young artists an opportunity to understand a process in which art is used to celebrate community.” said Kathleen Carter, owner of Starry Night Studio.

“We are excited to be a part of the National Christmas Tree display because it gives us a chance to showcase the joyful creativity expressed through children’s art.”

The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on December 6th, continuing a tradition started by Calvin Coolidge in 1923 as he lit the tree for 3,000 spectators. This year, the Obama family will once again light the trees as part of a four-week holiday celebration. The ceremony will launch a month long event including nightly holiday performances, Santa’s Workshop, nativity scene, and model train display.

Carter and her students collaborated to design playful, painted ornaments to represent their experiences of living in Florida. Among the designs are a jellyfish with sunglasses, a pink palm tree, and a flamingo. The children created the artwork, transferred it to the plastic globes, and then painted them with bright colors to emphasize and represent the cheerful colors we associate with Florida.
