Art Education Alumna Barbara Davis Wins Art Educator of the Year Award for the State of Florida

Published January 4, 2018

The Department of Art Education would like to extend its congratulations to Art Education alumna Barbara Davis for being named Art Educator of the Year by the Florida Art Education Association (FAEA).

With a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and an MFA from Florida State University, Barbara Davis has been teaching at the Florida State University School for 15 years. After receiving the Secondary Art Teacher of the Year award from the Florida Art Education Association (FAEA) back in 2008, she was selected this fall as the State Art Educator of the Year. FAEA has forwarded her nomination to the National Art Education Association (NAEA) for the Southeastern Region Art Educator of the Year Award.

Davis is National Board Certified in K-12 Art Education and taught in the Peace Corps in Botswana from late 1984 until December of 1990. She currently teaches high school students at Florida State University Schools (FSUS) sculpture techniques including raku and saggar, firing processes that originated in Asia many centuries ago. These methods require high heat and combustible materials, a combination generally forbidden in classroom settings. However, because FSUS is a research and development school sponsored by Florida State University, instructors there are encouraged to seek out unconventional learning opportunities and Davis is happy to oblige and provide an exemplary and unique learning experience for her students.

Congratulations, Barbara, for this outstanding achievement!
