We are mixing it up a little bit this year with our Annual Alumni and Friends reception held during the NAEA (National Art Education Association) conference in New Orleans, LA. Not only are we hoping everyone will attend to meet with Tom as a way to say thank you for all he has done over the years, we also also asking our friends to submit a ‘Selfie’!
To honor Dr. Tom Anderson’s career as the ‘Selfie King’ we are asking our attendees, if they wish to, to join us in submitting our ‘Selfies’ and a short statement for an exhibition that will be held on FSU campus in the Fall 2015 semester.
Tom Anderson requests your participation in his upcoming virtual and physical exhibition, The Socially Engaged Selfie, celebrating his 34 (or so) years at Florida State University.
“Frisco, North Carolina”. See current doctoral candidate, Jennifer Hammrock’s statement: ‘The Constant’ by clicking here.
The purpose of the Socially Engaged Selfie Site: A Virtual and Physical Exhibition for Developing Sense of Self, Place, and Community is to begin to construct a sense of place and community beyond just one individual. To participate, submit a high quality digital image and a written statement about how it reflects on your sense of self in relation to place, and/or community. The written statement should be no longer than 500 words. We will accept several styles of selfies. Once it is reviewed, your submission will then be posted on the website.
“St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis MO” See current doctoral candidate, Victoria Eudy’s statement: ‘Comfortable’ by clicking here.
Painted/drawn/collaged self-portraits are also eligible for both the virtual and physical exhibitions. Obviously, for the digital/website exhibit, a high quality photograph of the rendered artwork will need to be submitted. Because of space restrictions in the gallery, the physical drawing/painting/collage should be no larger than 10×14 inches.
Please send your selfies and statement to socialselfieafl@gmail.com with the word “selfie” in the subject heading. If you have any questions or comments, email socialselfieafl@gmail.com.
Selected entries (selfies accompanied by statements) submitted from the virtual exhibition will be chosen by the curators, printed, and hung for a juried physical exhibition in the William Johnston Art Gallery, at Florida State University, from approximately October 15 to December 15, 2015. All participants in the virtual and physical exhibitions will be invited to a reception, on October 16, at 6:00 PM, which will also serve as a retirement event for Tom Anderson.
Join in the celebration of ART as a sense of “selfie,” place, community: Art for Life.
