Art Education Doctoral Graduate:
Yoonjung Kang
On July 14, 2014, Yoonjung Kang defended her dissertation, “Art as a Mirror and Window on Cultural Diversity in South Korea: A Critical Analysis of Artworks by Three Contemporary Artists with Implications for Art Education.” Her major professor was Dr. Tom Anderson and she earned a Doctorate in Art Education.
In reflection of her experience at Florida State University, Dr. Yoonjung Kang stated:
“This is such a special moment—to have completed a PhD in Art Education from Florida State University and to be standing at the starting point of my new career in the field. Being part of the FSU art education program during my course of study has been the greatest pleasure for me. It has been my honor to have Dr. Tom Anderson as my major professor. His wise guidance and emotional support motivated and guided me as I worked to complete this study, and his sense of humor was an immense plus. I deeply respect him and send my gratitude. It was also my honor to have a group of great committee members: Dr. David Gussak, Dr. Jeffrey Broome, and Dr. Caroyln Henne. They truly encouraged me with warm words and professional advice throughout the study. Each class in my doctoral coursework not only gave me more complete knowledge of art education but also helped me grow as a responsible scholar. I also would like to thank Dr. Pat Villeneuve. Her Theory of Education class was something very special for my work as a teacher. I also thank Susan and Heather, two amazing staff members in our department. As an international student, every moment throughout this journey has been a challenge, but with each step I realized how fortunate I was to be with people who loved art and children, had good hearts, were open-minded, and cared about each other. I feel that all my experiences in this program were full of pleasure and that my students will be the beneficiaries of these great experiences in the near future. My beautiful time with the art education department of FSU now will continue as I become an FSU alumnus. Thank you.”
We also asked Dr. Yoonjung Kang about her graduating art show “Memories of Tallahassee” Dr. Kang stated:
“I am so glad to have this opportunity to show my artworks, which represent my memories of FSU and Tallahassee. These works are a reflection of my discovery of nature in Tallahassee and the wonderful impressions this nature made on me. I deeply thank Dr. David Gussak, chair of the department, and Dr. Tom Anderson, for allowing me to have this precious opportunity.”
It is with great pride that we congratulate our Summer 2014 Graduates! We look forward to hearing more about their future accomplishments and wish them well as they prepare for new challenges in the next phase of their life.
