The Department of Art Education at Florida State University and Arts for Florida Health invite you to Spanning Cancer: Cancer as an Episode in an Individual Life Story, a lecture presented by Professor Richard Freadman on Friday, January 29th at 1:30pm in WJB 2005.

Richard Freadman was educated at Brandeis University and The University of Oxford. He is the author of a memoir, Shadow of Doubt: My Father and Myself, and will be publishing a new book, Stepladder to Hindsight in April 2016. Freadman writes and lectures on illness memoir and on the use of life writing in health care settings.

Spanning Cancer discusses the ways in which autobiographical writing of cancer experience can be used by non-professional writers living with the disease or its aftermath. It has also been used by professional  writers in cancer memoirs to help find meaning in cancer experience. The lecture outlines a method of narrative therapy, coined reparative writing, and gives a hypothetical example of how the process might work for an individual living in remission from cancer.
