Published October 25, 2017

The FSU Department of Art Education would like to congratulate Art Education PhD candidate Alexandra Allen for her recent presention at the 1st International Conference on Disability Studies, Arts, and Education, hosted at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki, Finland on September 26th to the 27th, 2017.

Alex’s presentation, titled Developing an Arts Based Research Approach to Critical Disability Studies, shared her methodological approach to researching so-called ‘invisible disabilities’ through art making and autoethnographic narrative inquiry.  Featured are two images of some ‘artistic responses’ that were part of the autoethnographic research and are works in progress.  Alex Allen reported the productivity of the conference and mentioned that her session was also recorded.  This recording will be accessible via post in the near future for those who are interested in learning more.

Assistant Professor of Art Education Dr. Rachel Fendler stated as a response to Allen’s accomplishment:

We’ve been impressed watching Alex make great inroads as a scholar of disability studies within the field of art education during her time at FSU and we’re very proud of her work!

Congratulations, Alex, for this outstanding achievement!
