Department of Art Education Displays New “Arts Based Revolutions” Exhibition

This summer, the Department of Art Education is displaying an exciting new art exhibition. “Arts Based Revolutions” is a show that brings, “awakening, learning, and discovery” through arts-based research to those who come to view it. A range of topics relating to art education are explored within the show, including identity, politics, and personal experiences. The show includes paintings, drawings, handmade dresses, found objects, and interactive pieces that all come together to form an eye-opening and dynamic show.
The artists in the show are students from Dr. Sara Scott Shields’ Spring course, Arts Based Research, students from Dr. Rachel Fendler’s Spring course, Art for Life, 10 middle school mentees from Raa Middle School, and middle and high school students that participated in the summer Art For Social Justice Camp and the Foot Soldiers Art Intensive, offered by Dr. Sara Scott Shields and Dr. Rachel Fendler. The featured artists represent a range of graduate programs at FSU, including the Dance, Fine Arts, and Art Education. The show explores important issues ranging from LGBTQIA+ rights, mental health, political justice, poverty and more, through arts based research practices.
The show held a successful opening on May 23rd in the Art Gallery on the first floor of the William Johnston Building and will host an additional closing reception on July 18 from 5:00-7:00. “Arts Based Revolutions” will run through the end of July with times available for viewing between 9:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Our department welcomes all to come experience this tremendous show.
