Art Education Hosts Yoga Therapy & Art Therapy with Dr. Ellen Horovitz

Published February 20, 2018

The Department of Art Education and the FSU Art Therapy Association (FSU-ATA) conducts an annual workshop each spring in order to offer professional development for current FSU students and art therapy practicum supervisors in a variety of mental health service fields. FSU ATA would like to expand the workshop by offering a speaker and a topic that will increase attendance from non-art therapy students and promote multidisciplinary discussions and collaborations across campus.

This year, FSU-ATA is excited to announce our next spring workshop speaker, Dr. Ellen G. Horovitz, ATR-BC, LCAT, E-RYT, LFYP, C-IAYT. Dr. Horovitz is an internationally known leader and author in Art Therapy as well as a certified yoga therapist and psychotherapist. She is Professor Emerita and former director/founder of the Nazareth College graduate art therapy program and past President-elect of the American Art Therapy Association. In addition to being a professor and scholar, Dr. Horovitz has been in private practice for over 35 years and works clinically with individuals, couples, and families. The topics of her books range from art therapy to yoga therapy to mainstream applications of digital photography, and she has authored over 50 juried articles and 17 book chapters. Dr. Horovitz is also an expert in the field of Deafness/ Hard of Hearing and her book Visually Speaking: Art Therapy and the Deaf has been translated into Korean.

This presentation will address several learning objectives, including 1) Understand the benefits of yoga therapy and art therapy in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, 2) Learn numerous hands-on yoga therapy techniques for individuals, couples, and families, and 3) Understanding client populations who can benefit from a combined approach of art therapy and yoga therapy. These objectives and a hands-on experience will allow students and practitioners to learn art therapy and yoga therapy techniques that they can apply with clients who may not respond to traditional psychotherapy techniques and will be summarized in an accessible format that is applicable for an audience of students, educators, clinicians and researchers.

The workshop will be conducted on Saturday, February 24th, 2018, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. at the FSU campus in the William Johnston Building, Room 3002. A light breakfast, lecture, lunch, and a hands-on art experiential will be included.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to fsuarttherapy@gmail.com.
