FSU Art Education at AERI

The faculty and students of the Art Education program had a strong presence at the inaugural event of the Art Education Research Institute (AERI), which took place on March 15, 2016, at the Naperville Campus of Northern Illinois University. All three Art Education faculty members presented their research at the symposium, along with three doctoral candidates who participated in a Pecha Kucha session.

AERI is a new initiative developed by art education faculty across the USA with the aim of providing a space for scholars to participate in in-depth discussion and debate on current research in the field. Our own Dr. Jeff Broome is a member of the steering committee and he had a large role in the organization of the symposium. He informs us that even in its first year, the symposium was highly competitive with just over half of the submissions gaining acceptance.

Assistant Professor Dr. Sara Scott Shields spoke alongside her colleague Dr. Gloria Wilson (Asst. Professor at Middle Tennessee State University), in a talk titled Critical Conversations: Engaging Duoethnography to Create Polyvocal Texts about Race. This presentation shared the preliminary results of an innovative classroom project carried out this spring by Dr. Shields and Dr. Wilson that asked art education students from FSU to converse with their counterparts at Middle Tennessee State about race.

Assistant Professor Dr. Rachel Fendler presented a paper titled: Troubling the Representation of Learning in Educational Research: An Arts-Informed Approach. This paper draws on concepts from the arts to rethink how an ethnographic case study may be interpreted.

Associate Professor Dr. Jeff Broome spoke about his ongoing research into multi-age classrooms. In a talk titled The Art Teacher and Multi-­‐Age Homeroom Teachers: Qualitative Observations and Comparisons he shares insight into the teaching strategies, drawing a comparison between art classrooms and multi-age contexts.

In a special Pecha Kucha session for doctoral candidates, three of the nine presenters came from the Department of Art Education!

Jennifer Hamrock: Exploring the Becomings with Art Teaher–Art Student Assemblages Using Social Media Platforms
Cindy Jesup: Caught in the Net: Digital Awareness in the Art Classroom


Overall the event was a success, and this year’s participants report that they are looking forward to returning to Naperville in 2017 for the 2nd edition.
