This February, Florida State University’s Department of Art Education in collaboration with Opening Nights Performing Arts presented two “Creative Conversations” with Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Art Education, David Gussak, Ph.D., ATR-BC, and author of the book, “Orange is the New Black,” Piper Kerman. They spoke about their knowledge and experience on our current prison system and other prison-related topics. This event was free and open to the Students, Faculty, and Staff of the College of Fine Arts.
Additionally, Opening Nights Performing Arts and the FSU Department of Art Education held a free, Pop-Up Gallery Exhibit of Art in the Correctional facility. This exhibit featured selected artworks created by prison inmates, which demonstrate the creativity, ingenuity, and talent that exists within prison walls. Dr. Gussak was available to discuss the exhibit immediately following the lecture with Piper Kerman.
The event was a great success and we thank Piper Kerman and Dr. Gussak for coming together to share their expertise with those in attendance.
