Twitter Chat Series on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in Arts Administration

Published February 20, 2017

Over the course of the Spring 2017 semester, the Department of Art Education’s Arts Administration Program is hosting a Twitter chat series with arts organizations on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the arts.

The first chat was held on February 9th in partnership with Arts Administrators of Color and the Association of Arts Administration Educators. The discussion began by asking participants how they had experienced DEI in the arts. Other questions discussed included:

  • what participants have taught or learned about DEI in the arts
  • what DEI info/tools entry-level arts administrators bring to their jobs
  • do the arts reflect today’s diverse society

Response Highlights:

  • Diversity is a quantitative assessment of the representation of human difference
  • Equity is fairness
  • Inclusion is creating an environment of belonging
  • Examples of arts organizations that reflect today’s diverse society include: Grantmakers in the Arts, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, PAMM, Queens Museum, Studio Museum of Harlem
  • Funding, content and leadership could be more diverse
  • Equity and inclusion in arts management starts with equity and inclusion in student recruitment

The next chat is on Thursday, February 23th at 3:00 p.m. EST and co-hosted by Plural. The #DEInArts twitter chat series will culminate on March 9th with The Association of American Cultures (TAAC).

To join the conversation, follow @ArtsAdmi_FSU on Twitter and the hashtag #DEInArts. All are welcome to participate and we invite you to share with others using #DEInArts.
