Dr. Nancy Gerber, teaching faculty in the Art Therapy Program, co-facilitated the Arts-Based Research Special Interest Group (ABR-SIG) at the International Conference of Qualitative Inquiry May 19-22, 2021. The conference, held virtually this year, included a full day ABR pre-conference symposium which included workshops by distinguished national and international scholars on approaches to ABR.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Gerber along with Dr. Richard Siegesmund (Professor Emeritus Northern Illinois University) and Dr. Brooke Hofsess (Appalachian State University). The symposium included a highly engaged and energized group of presenters and participants discussing varying philosophical perspectives, genres, practices, and ethical challenges in ABR. Dr. Gerber also chaired a Plenary Session entitled “Imagining Future Directions in Arts-Based Research” including a focused and trans disciplinary discussion about the challenges and opportunities for ABR currently and moving forward.
