Assistantships & Funding

Graduate Assistantships

Admitted graduate students pursuing a traditional (face-to-face) master’s or doctoral degree in any of the four programs within the department, which include Arts Administration, Art Education, Art Therapy, and Museum Education and Visitor-Centered Curation, are eligible to apply for an assistantship. Assistantships are competitive and the number of funded positions varies from year to year. Assistantships supply graduate students with a tuition waiver and stipend.

The department offers three different types of assistantships:

Graduate Assistantships (GA): GAs may receive a position in support of an academic degree program, in support of the department administration, or in one of the following areas: Art & Design Library in William Johnston Building, social media team, community engagement initiative, Opening Nights Mural Project, departmental newsletter, and so on.

Research Assistantships (RA): RAs may receive a position to carry out research with a specific faculty member or within a funded research project.

Teaching Assistantships (TA): TAs are degree-seeking graduate students with a related master’s degree. TAs perform primary teaching duties as the Instructor of Record (IOR). These assistantships are only offered to PhD candidates with previous teaching experience. Non-native English speakers must pass a speaking proficiency exam to become an Instructor of Record (See: https://cies.fsu.edu/programs/english-academic-purposes/speak-exam-information).

A note about distance learning (DL) students: Students in a distance learning program are NOT eligible for a graduate assistantship from the department. We currently cannot hire remote students to complete the required work commitment required by the assistantship contract. We encourage students to consider scholarships and other funding opportunities, listed below.

How to Apply

Completed assistantship applications are due at the time of spring application deadlines and funding decisions are typically made between February-April for the upcoming fall. Currently enrolled students can also apply for an assistantship.

Prospective students – Assistantship applications should be completed in the SLATE application system. Please see the admissions page for deadlines for students who would like to be considered for funding.

Current Students – Applications for current students should be sent via email to the director of your program.
