Origins: – 2nd Year Art Therapy Students Exhibition

The Department invites you to attend Origins:, an exhibition hosted by  second-year students from the Art Therapy Masters Program!

During this spring semester, second year art therapy graduate students were enrolled in a course named “Studio Art & Self-Care Concepts,” which focused on studio art practice, self-care concepts, and exhibition related to art therapy. Providing the opportunity for students to further develop studio art skills while engaging in the creative work as a means for self-development and care, the class included formulation of individualized studio goals, art making, and self-evaluation processes. Additionally, students learned the value of exhibit participation for themselves and clients by collaboratively planning and implementing a class art exhibit.

Some class material covered the balance of maintaining a personal art practice and maintaining artistic identity while balancing a professional art therapy practice and therapeutic identity. Students found this artistic engagement both a challenge at times and a much needed break from the demands of academic research and the studying mindset. As a summation of their course learning, the students will be hosting an exhibition titled Origins:.

The show’s statement is as follows:

Art therapists help people express and explore their identity through art making. However, practicing what we preach at times can be difficult. FSU Art Therapy graduate students took the semester to explore the origins of their own self-care practices. This exhibit showcases the art that has emerged in this process of reconnecting with the artist in all of us.

Consider joining the second-year art therapy students in viewing the wonderful fine art created while celebrating the end of the semester. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 1st, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on the 4th floor of the William Johnston Building. Refreshments will be offered.
