David Gussak, Ph.D., ATR-BC.

Dr. Dave Gussak has served as the Chair for the Department of Art Education since 2008 and has been at the forefront of positive changes within the department for 10 years.

Art Therapy student Amanda Schattie sat down with Dr. Gussak to discuss his time with the Department of Art Education and his planned future endeavors.

My future plans are to continue my work and become much more involved with the Department of Corrections here in Florida as well as Arts in Corrections programs around the country and the world. I am in the middle of a new book that will be completed by December, and I am finalizing the proposal and contract for a second one.

During Dr. Gussak’s time as Chair, the department has added a new focus toward encompassing social justice and working with surrounding communities. Job placement rates for all Art Education programs have increased to over 90% within 3-6 months after graduation. These are among many successes that Gussak stated as being part of his most proud accomplishments with the department.

I have also appreciated the opportunity to expand our programs and create some wonderful experiences and opportunities, and being allowed to work on a communal vision of what we can be.

The full interview with Dr. Gussak can be found in the Spring 2018 issue of Art Education’s annual newsletter, Art News.
