The Department of Art Education at Florida State University is proud to announce a meaningful new addition to this year’s Graduation and Awards Ceremony: the inaugural Frederic Fagnant Community and Education Partner Awards. This recognition celebrates the vital contributions of art educators, community partners, and clinical supervisors who mentor our students and strengthen the bridge between university learning and professional practice.
These awards honor individuals who embody excellence in mentorship and community engagement. Each recipient represents the impact of collaborative partnerships in shaping the next generation of art educators, arts administrators, and art therapists.
2026 Award Recipients



Art Education: Katie Aylward-Smith, Raa Middle School
Katie Aylward-Smith, an FSU alumna and current graduate student, is an artist, educator, and advocate for student-centered learning. As a Fine Art Instructor at Raa Middle School for over a decade, she has mentored numerous pre-service teachers, opening her classroom as a space of experimentation, care, and professional growth. Her leadership within her school community and commitment to fostering creativity make her an exceptional partner in art education.
Arts Administration: Arielle Raff, LeMoyne Arts
Arielle Raff, Executive Director of LeMoyne Arts, brings a lifelong commitment to the arts as a performer, educator, and administrator. Since joining LeMoyne Arts in 2021, she has cultivated inclusive and engaged community spaces that expand access to visual arts education and participation. Her leadership strengthens connections between local arts organizations and FSU students, offering meaningful opportunities for learning and collaboration.
Art Therapy: Nicole Rainey, Mosaic Creative Counseling
Nicole Rainey, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Registered Art Therapist, is an alumna of FSU’s Art Therapy program and the owner of Mosaic Creative Counseling in Tallahassee. With extensive experience supporting individuals navigating trauma, grief, and complex life challenges, Nicole integrates creative practices into therapeutic work. Her mentorship and clinical expertise provide invaluable guidance to students entering the field.

By recognizing these partnerships, we are supporting the relationships that enrich student learning, professional identity formation, and community impact.
